As I strolled aimlessly on our along the barbed wire fence line this morning, basking in the warmth of the sun and the presence of my Lord, I was reminded once again of the simple yet profound lessons His creation offers. Amongst the weeds, the delicate beauty of the Morning Glory stood out, a testament to God's handiwork. It brought to mind the parable of the weeds and wheat: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn." (Matthew 13:24-30)
The Morning Glory is a simple but telling plant. Often found climbing fences and entwining with other plants, it blooms early in the morning, greeting the day with open, vibrant flowers. The common name "morning glory" thus reflects the plant's habit of opening its flowers with the rising sun, making it a charming reminder of the early hours of the day. These blossoms are not just beautiful to behold; they also play a vital role in the ecosystem. The Morning Glory opens up to receive nourishment from the rising sun, a daily ritual that mirrors our need for spiritual nourishment. In turn, it provides sustenance to insects, offering nectar that supports the pollinators essential for the reproduction of many plants.
This morning, as I admired the Morning Glories, I reflected on how we, too, should rise each day with a heart full of gratitude. Just as the Morning Glory blooms at dawn, we are called to greet each new day with thanksgiving for God's creation and spend time in the presence of the Son. By doing so, we can open ourselves to receive the spiritual nourishment we need to grow and thrive, sharing His love and light with those around us.
May we, like the Morning Glory, embrace each new day with a spirit of worship and gratitude, allowing the light of Christ to shine through us.
