Like Jesus at His thanksgiving table with the disciples, we, too, have the opportunity to extend love, grace, and understanding to those around us this year.
Whether they challenge us like Simon, doubt us like Thomas, or even disappoint us like Judas, Jesus shows us how to serve, love, and forgive. This Thanksgiving, let’s see the people at our table through His eyes, offering them the same grace He extends to us.
Who’s at Your Table?
As you gather with family and friends, consider how the personalities of Jesus’ disciples might be reflected in those seated around your table:
Matthew, the Tax Collector(Modern-day IRS Agent)Represents those in professions that might draw criticism. Extend gratitude and understanding to those who carry societal burdens.
Simon the Zealot(Modern-day Political Activist)Passionate and outspoken, reminding us to listen with patience and seek common ground.
Peter, the Fisherman(Modern-day Hardworking Blue-collar Worker)Reflecting those who work tirelessly to provide. Appreciate their effort and forgive their impulsiveness.
Thomas, the Doubter(Modern-day Skeptic)Representing the questioners in our lives who challenge ideas or traditions. Offer them understanding without judgment.
John, the Beloved Disciple(Modern-day Empathetic Listener)Symbolizing those who provide a calming presence and unconditional love. Celebrate their warmth.
Judas Iscariot(Modern-day Betrayer or Troubled Individual)Representing those who may have hurt us or are struggling internally. Follow Jesus’ example by extending forgiveness and compassion.
James and John, the Sons of Thunder(Modern-day Ambitious Siblings or Rivals)Reflecting family members with strong personalities. Encourage their passion and affirm their value.
Andrew, the Quiet Connector(Modern-day Networker)Representing those who quietly work behind the scenes to build connections. Appreciate their humble contributions.
Philip, the Curious Questioner(Modern-day Tech Enthusiast or Researcher)Embodying curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Celebrate their inquisitive nature.
Bartholomew(Modern-day Introvert)Reflecting those who observe and contribute in quiet, meaningful ways. Respect their presence.
James the Less(Modern-day Humble Contributor)Symbolizing those who work faithfully in the background without seeking recognition. Honor their quiet dedication.
Thaddeus(Modern-day Encourager)Representing those who uplift and inspire others with their thoughtfulness. Affirm their positivity.
A Thanksgiving Challenge
As you sit down to your meal, remember the diversity among Jesus’ disciples and how He extended grace to each of them. Reflect on how you can offer that same grace to those around you—whether they are loud or quiet, skeptical or faithful, familiar or distant.
Scripture Reflection
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." (John 13:34, ESV)
